Rural transit provider, NTTA, and rain!

Friends,
1. On Monday, April 22, I expect the Commissioners Court to select the Texoma Area Paratransit System (TAPS) as the rural transit provider for rural Collin County. TAPS currently serves several counties along the Red River.

You may remember that the Court delayed our vote on this issue in order to allow McKinney time to decide if they would make the same decision. The City Council has signaled that they plan to also select TAPS as their urban area provider, although they have not taken a vote to date.

I believe this selection will greatly benefit our county, expanding bus and van service for our elderly and disabled and others needing transit services. TAPS will serve the majority of the geographic area of the county and will provide opportunity for our cities and businesses to increase services as needed. Raytheon in McKinney currently has a service contract with TAPS, for instance.

This doesn’t mean the county will pay for increased services; it means that TAPS can expand their services through marketing.

2. This week the North Texas Tollway Authority (NTTA) gave the four county judges (Collin, Dallas, Denton, and Tarrant) the final briefing on their Independent Financial and Performance Review that came out of the 2011 legislative session. I believe, as every county judge articulated, that NTTA made a great deal of progress in every area of review; transparency, procurement, organization, and finance.

All briefing materials are available for your review at https://www.ntta.org/whoweare/boardofdirectors/Pages/Independent-Financial-and-Performance-Review.aspx

In Collin County, NTTA operates the Dallas North Tollway, the President George Bush Turnpike, and the Sam Rayburn Tollway.

3. Continue to pray for rain. Since the first of the year, Lake Lavon has gone up less than two feet and we are still more than seven feet low. Historically, we need to fill the lake before the end of May.

Sincerely,
Keith
